Pain during Sex

Women often complain about pain during sex and avoid consulting a gynecologist. The pain often goes from worse to worst and no medical assistance is taken, which can be dangerous. The ladies who’re facing this problem every time during the sexual intercourse as a result of which they start avoiding sex should be aware of the causes and the treatment.

Vaginismus – This is a common condition in which there is a spasm in the vaginal muscles, when sexual intercourse is attempted. It is mainly caused by the fear of being hurt and results in painful intercourse.

Vaginal infections – These conditions are common and include yeast infections.

Problems with the cervix (opening to the uterus) – In this case, the penis can reach the cervix at maximum penetration, so problems with the cervix (such as infections) can cause pain during intercourse and deep penetration.

Problems with the uterus – These problems may include fibroids that can cause deep intercourse pain.

Endometriosis – A condition in which the endometrium (tissue lining the uterus) grows outside the uterus and hence becomes the main cause of pain during sex.

Problems with the ovaries – Such problems might include cysts on the ovaries.

Pelvic inflammatory disease – The tissues deep inside become badly inflamed and the pressure of intercourse causes deep pain.

Ectopic pregnancy – A pregnancy in which a fertilized egg develops outside of the uterus.

Menopause – The vaginal lining can lose its normal moisture and become dry and thin.
Intercourse too soon after surgery or childbirth.
Sexually transmitted diseases – Possible reasons of pain during sex may include genital warts, herpes sores or other STDs.
Injury to the vulva or vagina – These injuries may include a tear from childbirth or from a cut (episiotomy) in the perineum (area of skin between the vagina and the anus) that is made during labor.
Vulvodynia – The vulval area may have severe pain on lightest of touch during sex.
Psychogenic – If the woman had sex abuse, forced sex, doesn’t like partner, foul smell, anxiety due to any reason then that may hinder the lubrication.
Lichen Plaunus – One of the main reason of discomfort during sex is Lichen Plaunus. It is a skin condition which causes inflammation and ulcer like changes of the skin. Lichen Plaunus can occur on any part of the body including the vulva and vagina, more often in women of child bearing age

Increased vaginal discharge usually sticky, heavy and yellow.
Redness, soreness, burning and raw areas of the vulva and vagina.
Bleeding or pain with intercourse.
Scarring which may cause shortening, narrowing or closure of the vagina.
Symptoms may vary from woman to woman and may range from mild to severe.
It can be diagnosed by looking at the skin changes commonly associated with lichen plaunus. Vaginal discharge is also examined. On occasion of a biopsy or small sample of skin might be needed to help establish the diagnosis when the above findings are not clear.
Cause of Lichen Plaunus is not clear, some authorities put forward autoimmune etiology though.
It can be treated with steroid creams or intradermal injections of steroids.
Some treatments for female sexual pain do require a doctor’s care. If vaginal dryness is due to menopause, oestrogen creams can be used.

For cases of sexual pain in which there is no underlying medical cause, sexual therapy might be helpful. Some individuals may need to resolve issues such as guilt, inner conflicts regarding sex or feelings regarding a past abuse.
Call a doctor if there are symptoms such as bleeding, genital lesions, irregular periods, vaginal discharge or involuntary vaginal muscle contractions.
