Vaginismus can be classified into two types
Primary Vaginismus: This is when vaginal penetration has never been achieved. It is also called lifelong vaginismus. This is lifetime condition when pain always persists. There may be pain, generalized muscle spasms, and the woman may temporarily stop breathing. It gets reversed when the attempt at vaginal entry is blocked.
Secondary Vaginismus: This is when vaginal penetration might have been achieved once but no longer possible now, primarily due to factors such as gynecologic surgery, trauma or radiation (called acquired vaginismus). It normally stems from a specific event, like infection, menopause, traumatic event, development of medical condition, relationship issues, surgery or childbirth.
